Way of the Hunter 2 Trophies and Ratings Guide

How Way of the Hunter 2 trophies work: procedural generation vs presets in game 1, non-typical racks, what is still in development.

Way of the Hunter 2 Trophies: Procedural Generation and Rare Ratings

Way of the Hunter 2 generates trophies procedurally instead of assembling them from preset variations, so no two racks are alike. The catch, as of version 1.0 on October 3, 2026: the rare tiers players are actually hunting for do not exist yet — non-typical mule deer is still being added, superior and mythical trophies are in development, and the hunt rating system is being reworked.

Official source: Way of the Hunter 2: FAQ — "In the first game, trophies were largely built from preset variations. In Way of the Hunter 2, trophies are procedurally generated, allowing for much greater variation and more unique results between individual animals."

What "procedural" actually means in game 2

The developers put the technical version in a Dev Diary published April 23, 2026, narrated by gameplay engineer Stanislav. Each set of antlers is built at runtime by what the diary calls a "brand new genetics system," producing variation "From subtle asymmetries to dramatic variations in size, shape, and complexity" and guaranteeing "no two animals are ever truly alike."

That is the whole difference from the first game. There is no table of hand-made rack models to unlock, and no loot tier to roll for — the shape of your trophy is a property of the individual animal you tracked and harvested.

Trophy tiers: live, announced, and in development

Trophy type Status at v1.0 (October 3, 2026) What the developers have actually said
Procedurally generated antlers and mounts Live throughout Early Access and at 1.0 In game 2, "trophies are procedurally generated" — FAQ
Non-typical trophies Not in 1.0. Mule deer "in progress" "Non-typical Mule deer trophies are currently being added to the game, we're still polishing this, but it's already in progress" — FAQ
Superior trophies In development "We're also working on superior and mythical trophies" — FAQ
Mythical trophies In development Same FAQ answer; named first on the September 2026 roadmap
Hunt rating beyond trophy size Being reworked Giving you "a new way to measure your hunts beyond trophy size alone" — FAQ
Additional species getting non-typical racks "Additional species will follow over time" — no list published FAQ
Do not plan a farm around non-typical, superior or mythical racks yet

None of the three has a species list, a drop rate, a screenshot or a release date in any official source. Every one of them was promised during Early Access and none shipped on September 29, 2026.

Non-typical mule deer: promised in June, still missing at 1.0

The timeline is worth tracking because the promise moved three times. On April 9, 2026 the first Community Feedback Round opened a thread titled "Mule deer – Antlers & trophies." On June 11, 2026 a roadmap listed "Non-typical trophies (starting with mule deer)" under the heading "Here’s what you can expect very soon". Two months later, on August 20, 2026, they opened a two-week Community Feedback Round focused on one species: White-tailed Deer, "especially its antlers, trophy appearance, and overall trophy system."

Then, on September 28, 2026, the day before launch, the "Road Ahead" roadmap said it plainly: "Non-typical trophies, one of the most requested features, is also not ready for 1.0. We know this one has been asked about the most, and it remains a top priority on our roadmap."

Nothing changed after that. The last Steam news item to mention a trophy at all is Update 0.4.1 on September 1, 2026; the only post-launch item, Update 1.1 (version 212672, October 1, 2026), has zero mentions of trophies, non-typical racks or hunt rating. The full breakdown of what did land is in the Update 1.1 patch notes breakdown.

In practice this means the Rocky Mountain mule deer you shoot today in New Laurentia gets a unique generated rack, but it is not classified as non-typical. That is the difference everyone asking about "rare racks" is really running into.

Superior, mythical, and the only rarity lever that works today

Superior and mythical are the two rungs above non-typical, and both are still in development. The FAQ stacks them on top of non-typical — "adding even more variety on top of non-typical trophies" — and the September 2026 roadmap files all three under progression work: "We're expanding the progression and reward systems with new trophy types and the new hunt rating system. The goal is to give experienced hunters more things to work towards while making every hunt feel a little more meaningful."

What nobody has published is the part that would let you plan a hunt around them: no species list, no definition of what separates a superior rack from a non-typical one, no rarity percentages, no screenshots, no release window. "More details on these will follow as they get closer to release" is the entire commitment.

What does exist is the measurement layer those tiers will be hung on, and it was built during Early Access rather than at launch. Update 0.1.0 on April 28, 2026 added the numeric and star-rating surfaces in one go:

Update 0.1.0 addition (April 28, 2026) Why it matters for rare trophies
Trophy measurements for Western moose First species carrying numeric measurements rather than a bare star count
Trophy rating (stars) in binocular animal analysis Stars become readable before the shot, not after the claim
Trophy estimated range in the in-game encyclopedia Added in the same patch that fixed it "Displaying incorrect values of the trophy estimated range"

That existing rating surface is why the developers describe the hunt rating work as a rework rather than a new system — and why the deer keep being named first. Community Feedback Round #1 on April 9, 2026 ran a thread titled "Mule deer – Antlers & trophies," and the developers reported "great discussions around Mule deer needing more mass, variation, and less identical racks." Two months later Round #2 moved to White-tailed Deer, again centred on antlers.

If your trophy scores feel low, check the save date before blaming the generator

Update 2 on May 27, 2026 raised base fitness across every species "for better trophy distribution, reducing the chance of most animals spawning with a 1-star trophy rating" — and the same line carries a caveat that catches people out: "this change applies to new saves only - existing saves will not be affected." The patch closes with "Further improvements to trophy distribution are planned for a future update." A save created before that date never received the bump, which is a different problem from bad luck. Reading animals well is covered in the hunting tips guide; the inputs that drive those stars are in the next section.

What the current rating is: star rating driven by age and fitness

At 1.0 there is no hunt-rating overhaul, but the existing trophy star rating is more than a size comparison. Two 2026 patches pin down what feeds it:

Update Date Patch line
Update 0.3.2 (v204916) August 6, 2026 "Fixed: All Mallards, regardless of Age, Fitness or Trophy Score, are 1 Star"
Update 0.4.1 September 1, 2026 "Fixed: Trophy star rating fluctuating unexpectedly as animals age"
Update 0.4.1 September 1, 2026 "Fixed: Dall Sheep trophy rating too low relative to fitness and age"

Age and fitness are the inputs. That connects trophies to the ecosystem work: restoring habitats, clearing pollution and removing invasive species raises the "fitness potential of the local herds," which is the same stat the rating reads. It also explains why species get hard-capped — mallards are locked to one star regardless of what you do.

Steam achievements and the PS5 Platinum

The FAQ answer to "Will achievements be included?" is short: "Yes, achievements will be included, including a Platinum Trophy on PS5." The Steam store page lists Steam Achievements among its features.

Steam's global stats page listed 20 achievements on October 3, 2026, and 18 of them have their description hidden. Only the two "You're Hired" achievements show a description. Unlock rates, in the order Steam displays them:

# Achievement % of all players
1 The Right Way 22.0%
2 Let Them Cook 20.8%
3 Taxing Returns 17.9%
4 Silence! 10.1%
5 Falling Out 8.0%
6 Caller of Duty 7.8%
7 Over the Top 7.4%
8 Camper 7.0%
9 Way of the Jäger 4.7%
10 Chaotic Precision 4.3%
11 Wheely Wonka 3.9%
12 Blind Spot 3.3%
13 Sneaky Pete 3.1%
14 Straight Arrow 2.1%
15 Decoy Effect 2.0%
16 Bolt Thrower 1.7%
17 You're Hired: New Laurentia 1.2%
18 Top Condition 1.1%
19 Scent Betrayal 0.9%
20 You're Hired: Kilimaya Reserve 0.4%

The two visible descriptions: "You're Hired: New Laurentia — Complete all initial Hearth & Hunt assignments in New Laurentia" and "You're Hired: Kilimaya Reserve — Complete all initial Hearth & Hunt assignments in Kilimaya Reserve."

None of the 20 names refers to a trophy, a rack or a record. Only the two "You're Hired" achievements are described at all, and both are about finishing the Hearth & Hunt assignments — so on Steam, achievement hunting and trophy hunting are two separate activities in this game.

Two different things share the word "trophy"

Animal trophies are generated mounts you place in the lodge. The Season Pass verification statues are a third, unrelated thing: a deer statue in New Laurentia, a dog and an ibex statue at Hearth & Hunt Headquarters, and a kudu statue in Kilimaya Reserve. The elk statue belongs to the Heirloom Pack, not the Season Pass. Details in the Season Pass guide.

"Hunter high trophy status": a forum theory, not a mechanic

If you have read the Steam forums, you have probably seen this one. On April 15, 2026, a user posted a thread titled "Hunter Hight Trophy Status Ghosts Theory" in General Discussions. The argument: lobby dialogue from Mikael Anderson refers to older, more valuable animals having "hunter high trophy status," and the poster speculates that such animals avoid open ground, stay in dense forest and bolt earlier, which would explain why nobody has ever found one.

Treat this as community speculation. No official FAQ answer, roadmap entry or patch note mentions any "high trophy status" mechanic, no habitat-based rarity system, or an age-based species that avoids open spaces. The lobby dialogue is real; the mechanic built on top of it is a theory. Every official statement about rarity runs through non-typical, superior and mythical instead.

Where your trophies live

Trophies are displayed at the Hearth & Hunt Headquarters lodge, which the FAQ describes as "an expandable lodge where you can display your best trophies from across the reserves." The Steam store page is blunter: "Animals are displayed as taxidermized trophies in the hunting lodge." The Headquarters is the 16 km² map, not one of the two 100 km² hunting reserves — see the maps and reserves breakdown.

Three trophy-adjacent bugs were fixed before launch and are worth knowing because they touch what gets recorded:

  • Patch 0.3.1 — "Fixed: Hunting log displaying incorrect weight for Sold animals"
  • Patch 0.3.1 — "Fixed: Not being able to place Ptarmigan taxidermies"
  • Update 0.3.2 — "Fixed: Taxidermies negatively impacting performance in some situations"

The species that can carry these racks are listed in the full 28-animal roster.

FAQ

Does Way of the Hunter 2 have non-typical trophies? Not at version 1.0. Non-typical mule deer trophies were being added and polished as of the 1.0 FAQ, but they were not in the game on October 3, 2026. Update 1.1 did not add them.

What is a superior or mythical trophy? Two announced tiers above non-typical, both in development with no species, drop rate or date published. Not huntable content today.

How is trophy rating calculated at 1.0? Age and fitness drive the trophy star rating — patch notes for Updates 0.3.2 and 0.4.1 fix cases where animals of any age or fitness, including all mallards, were not rated correctly. The broader hunt rating system that goes beyond trophy size is still being reworked.

How many achievements does the game have? Twenty on Steam as of October 3, 2026, of which 18 have hidden descriptions. A Platinum Trophy is confirmed for PS5.

Is there a secret rare animal that avoids open spaces? No official source says so. That idea comes from a community theory thread about lobby dialogue, and it is not part of the trophy system as described by the developers.
