Official answer on Way of the Hunter 2 crossplay: not in version 1.0. PC, PS5 and Xbox sessions are fully separate. What the dev says.
Way of the Hunter 2 Crossplay: Not in Version 1.0
No. Way of the Hunter 2 has no crossplay in version 1.0, and the developer's answer is three words long: "Not in version 1.0." A Steam player cannot join a PS5 session, an Xbox player cannot join a Steam session, and PS5 and Xbox cannot meet either — the only co-op in the launch build is two people on the same platform in a two-player free-play session.
Checked on 2026-10-03 against version 1.1 (Version 212672), that is still the position. Three things get mixed up with it in search results: crossplay is not arriving in the next patch, it is not on the developer's post-launch roadmap, and nothing about it waits on a setting you can change.
What the developer actually wrote
"Not in version 1.0. We know it's a popular request, and we're looking into it, but before we can promise anything, we need to confirm we can meet all the technical and other requirements involved from every platform holder. We plan to look into it in the foreseeable future."
Official source: Way of the Hunter 2: FAQ
| Wording in the FAQ | What it commits the developer to |
|---|---|
| "Not in version 1.0" | No crossplay in the shipped 1.0 build |
| "we're looking into it" | An evaluation, not a scheduled feature |
| "before we can promise anything" | No date announced |
| "requirements … from every platform holder" | Steam, PlayStation and Xbox all have to clear it |
| "in the foreseeable future" | No timeline attached |
The session matrix: who can share a session in 1.0
| Pair | Share a session? | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| PC (Steam) and PC (Steam) | Yes | "a two-player free-play co-op experience" — the wording the FAQ uses |
| PC (Steam) and PC (GOG) | Not documented | GOG is named as a PC storefront; nothing is said about shared sessions |
| PC and PS5 | No | Separate friend lists, separate matchmaking |
| PC and Xbox Series X|S | No | Same |
| PS5 and Xbox Series X|S | No | Same |
| Console offline, alone | Not applicable | Supported on consoles, "without Multiplayer, naturally" |
The Steam store page agrees by omission: searching its HTML for "crossplay" and "cross-platform" on 2026-10-03 returns nothing. What it does carry is the Steam API tag list — Single-player, Multi-player, Co-op, Online Co-op — plus Steam Cloud and Family Sharing. Shared Split-Screen is not among them, and the FAQ describes the current co-op mode only as an online two-player free-play experience.
Is crossplay on the roadmap? No
The phrase doing the work in the FAQ quote is "every platform holder." Read plainly, the answer depends on sign-off from more than one storefront owner rather than on anything inside the build. The developer does not say which requirement is the blocker, and we found no other official statement naming one.
The post-launch roadmap page, The Road Ahead, lists the multiplayer work the developer has actually committed to. Crossplay is not in that list, and the page contains no occurrence of "crossplay" or "cross-platform" as of 2026-10-03 — the only near-match is the phrase "across platforms" in a sentence about pre-orders and editions.
| Multiplayer feature | On the roadmap? | Wording used |
|---|---|---|
| Text chat | Yes | "first planned multiplayer improvements" |
| Password-protected sessions | Yes | "first planned multiplayer improvements" |
| More than two players | Yes | "the necessary optimizations for 3+ player support" |
| Persistent Worlds across sessions | Yes | "larger multiplayer improvements" |
| Co-op expeditions | Yes | "larger multiplayer improvements" |
| Crossplay | No | Only "we're looking into it" in the FAQ |
The timing language is vague for the bigger items: "Some of the more ambitious features, especially new multiplayer modes, will take longer and are planned for 2027 and beyond." So the reading is not "crossplay is coming in 2027" but "crossplay has not been scheduled, and nothing will be promised before the platform-holder requirements are confirmed."
Official source: Way of the Hunter 2: Here's updated Roadmap for 1.0 and Beyond
What multiplayer does support
- Two players maximum. No third player, no party of four.
- Separate worlds. Single-player and multiplayer use separate animal populations; changes in one do not carry into the other.
- No cross-session sharing. Sessions are not synced across play sessions.
- No split-screen, no crossplay.
Neither cross-save nor cross-progression appears in the FAQ or on the roadmap. Because single-player and multiplayer already use separate worlds and animal populations, even a future crossplay feature would not merge solo and co-op progress.
Opening a lobby is covered in our multiplayer how-to; the three maps you would hunt together are on the maps and reserves page.

Platform-specific multiplayer bugs are the crossplay problem in miniature
The official known-issues list, updated for version 1.1, tracks multiplayer problems per platform. What is "normal" for a PS5 player is not normal for an Xbox Series S owner.
| Known issue (Multiplayer section) | Platform | Workaround given |
|---|---|---|
| Client's harvested animals can disappear while the Host is far away | General | Stay closer to the host |
| Temporary desync in certain situations | General | Close the distance, or wait |
| Rare inability to interact with doors and parking signs | General | Reconnect to the session |
| Animal sounds may not be audible | General | None listed |
| Accepting an invite before finishing the tutorial locks the account | General | Delete save files; prevent it by finishing the tutorial |
| Inventory may clear after fast-travel | Xbox | None listed |
Elsewhere on the same list: an Xbox Series S crash near a lodge with heavily populated dioramas, a PS5 player stuck after using the Primos stick following a harvest, and a PS5 Performance Mode bug where the mountain renders see-through near Sasquatch Lake.
Two patch cycles have gone into multiplayer: update 1.0 fixed a client desync while the host navigated Storage or Shop plus empty-inventory joins, and update 1.1 fixed the clip-on radial menu and vehicle shaking after rejoining. Neither touched platform separation, and the known-issues list does not track platform separation as a defect. Our update 1.1 breakdown and known issues page have the rest.

Buying on one platform and playing with someone on another
There is no cross-buy and no bundle to route around this. Each platform is a separate purchase at $39.99 Standard and $59.99 Deluxe, and the editions do not travel either. Only the Heirloom Pack delivery differs: Steam Early Access players get it free at launch, console players by pre-ordering. Our price and editions page covers each tier; what each platform build carries covers the platform differences.
Steam Cloud and Steam Family Sharing are both enabled for the Steam build. Both are Steam platform features rather than anything the game implements, so lending the PC copy works inside a Steam family — neither puts a console player into your session.
Where the "yes" answers come from
As of 2026-10-03 this query ranks auto-generated wiki-style pages that contradict each other and the developer. One search snippet claims crossplay "works across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S," but the page behind that URL now serves a 404 error page. Another says only that there has been "no official confirmation" — weaker than the developer's position, because the confirmation exists and is negative.
Finding a co-op partner this week
Same-platform is the only option, so the search happens inside one ecosystem. The developer points players at the official Discord, the Steam forums and Reddit, and those are where hunting groups form.
On Xbox, avoid fast-travel during a session until that known issue is fixed, and treat the host's machine as the anchor — several listed multiplayer bugs resolve by closing the distance to the host.
FAQ
Can I play with a friend on a different platform? No. In version 1.0, and as of version 1.1, PC, PS5 and Xbox players cannot share a session.
Will crossplay come in a later patch? No patch, date or test period has been announced. The developer is "looking into it" and must confirm requirements with every platform holder first.
Does the GOG version have its own multiplayer? The FAQ lists PC as "Steam, GOG" but says nothing about whether the GOG build has multiplayer or shares sessions with Steam.
Is there a way to play together on one screen? Not according to Steam's feature list, which includes Multi-player, Co-op and Online Co-op but not Shared Split-Screen. The FAQ describes the current co-op mode only as a two-player free-play online experience.
