Way of the Hunter 2 Beginner Guide: First Hour, Money and Mistakes

Version 1.0 launched on 29 September 2026 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; this page reflects that build plus Update 1.1 from 1 October 2026, checked on 3 October 2026. Three things matter before your first shot: fix your ammo loadout, because carry capacity is a hard cap; learn that tracks are generated between need zones rather than running along fixed paths; and know that only three species are documented as charging at you in 1.0.

The one-minute version: three things to do first

  1. Sort ammo before leaving the lodge. You carry 2 ammo sets with no backpack, 4 with the default, 6 with the big backpack, and each weapon has one free ammo type — alternates cost money.
  2. Turn on the high-contrast setting for signs and tracks. It shipped in 1.0 and sits in the settings menu, added for players who found tracks hard to spot.
  3. Hunt where the danger is documented. The three species with predator charging are all on Kilimaya Reserve, so start on the North American map.
Run the lodge loop before your first hunt, not after

The Shop opens from the laptop in your lodge or the vicinity menu, and weapon selection happens in Storage. Both are on the Headquarters map, so a second trip back is cheap on day one and impossible once you have driven out.

Ammo is a hard cap, not a suggestion

The Ammo Change system arrived in Update 0.5.0 and is part of the default build. The capacity numbers below are the developer's own, published with the loadout order:

Backpack Ammo sets you can carry
No backpack 2
Default backpack 4
Big backpack 6
  • Each weapon has one default, free ammo type. Alternates are paid.
  • Buy ammo from the lodge laptop or the vicinity menu, then take rifles and shotguns from Storage and fill the ammo slots — several slots can hold the same type — before equipping the ammo to the rifles.
  • Bows and arrows had no alternate ammo types in the FAQ's wording — they were promised after full release.
Every Early Access ammo guide is out of date

Unlimited-for-your-calibre ammo was the pre-0.5.0 behaviour. Any guide, video or habit formed before 22 September 2026 describes a game that no longer exists.

One 1.0 fix is worth knowing: an ammo slot no longer becomes unavailable after you clear a type down to zero bullets. Calibre pairings and suppressors are on best weapons and ammo and ammo and suppressors.

What money actually buys in 1.0

The honest answer is narrower than most guides claim: the developer has published no price list for individual ammo purchases and no trophy payout table. The Steam store page and the FAQ describe a Shop and paid alternate ammo but never state what a box costs or what a trophy pays — the exact figures floating around are datamined.

Item Official price or status
Standard Edition $39.99 / €39.99 / £34.99 / AU$54.95 / ¥5,170
Deluxe Edition $59.99 / €59.99 / £49.99 / AU$99.95 / ¥7,590
Season One Season Pass 8 DLCs across the first year; $34.99 on Steam
Heirloom Pack Engraved .243 Win rifle, scope, .270 Win rifle, lodge elk statue; free with Early Access purchase or console pre-order
Night Hunting Pack Free for owners of the original Way of the Hunter
Original-game owners 13% off Standard and Deluxe on every platform

The lodge is a place, not a money machine. It sits on Hearth & Hunt Headquarters, the 16 km² hub map with its own hunting, and expands so you can display trophies from across the reserves — the Heirloom Pack's elk statue is meant for it.

A second track is not about trophies: the 1.0 launch post lists infrastructure improvements that restore habitats, remove pollution and clear invasive species to raise the fitness potential of local herds. The reworked hunt rating system was still in development at launch. Editions are compared on our price and editions page.

Tracks are generated between need zones

This rule explains why beginners lose animals and veterans do not. From the FAQ: tracks are dynamically created between need zones, and spooked animals can generate temporary dynamic tracks as they move across the map.

A trail is a question, not a highway. It connects where an animal fed, watered or rested, so a track that runs out usually means you reached the zone it was heading for — circle back along your own line before widening the search. When the trail is truly gone, the dog is faster: it finds animal signs, locates active life zones, and picks up wounded animals along blood trails. 1.0 ships no extra dog breeds; advanced training and a dedicated dog DLC are post-launch. Wind, calls and approach angles are on the hunting tips page.

Only three species are documented as charging you in 1.0

Species Reserve Behaviour documented for 1.0
Southern lion Kilimaya Reserve Predator charging / aggressive reaction implemented
Common hippopotamus Kilimaya Reserve Predator charging / aggressive reaction implemented
Cape buffalo Kilimaya Reserve Predator charging / aggressive reaction implemented

The developers call predator behaviour a work in progress, done for those three, with expansion to more species and possible random attacks still ahead — a roadmap statement, not a promise about any given hunt. Difficulty is likewise settled at three levels, with rebalancing planned.

A related bug is closed: the 1.0 notes fix being unable to die after the first death. If you played Early Access and remember being unkillable after your first hunt, that ended on 29 September 2026. Species worth chasing are on the animals list, Africa's specific dangers on the Kilimaya reserve guide.

Five day-one mistakes that cost the first session

  1. Buying ammo before checking your backpack tier, or trusting pre-0.5.0 advice. Capacity is 2, 4 or 6 sets and a purchase cannot be refunded into a slot you do not have; unlimited calibre ammo stopped being free on 22 September 2026, one week before the 29 September launch.
  2. Expecting a weather forecast you control. Update 1.1 added a long-term forecast whose changes only take effect after 48 in-game hours — see Update 1.1 patch notes.
  3. Carrying an old Demo config. Wrong resolution options, broken UI scaling and odd graphical particles usually mean Demo config files carried over. Close the game, press Win+R, paste %LocalAppData%\WOTH2\Saved, and delete the folder named Config only.
  4. Assuming an Early Access save is guaranteed. Preserving progress through the 1.0 transition is the developers' stated goal, and they add that they cannot promise it 100%.
  5. Planning a three-player night. Multiplayer in 1.0 is two-player free-play co-op, there is no crossplay between PC, PS5 and Xbox, and the single-player and multiplayer worlds are separate — see crossplay and multiplayer how-to.

Your first hour, step by step

  • 0–5 min. Set the high-contrast sign and track option, adjust crosshair and Hunter Assist, and walk into the lodge so you know where the Shop laptop and Storage are.
  • 5–15 min. Build one loadout and one ammo set, and do not over-buy. The tutorial includes a turkey segment, and 1.0 had to fix both extra weapons appearing during it and ammo-change soft locks there.
  • 15–60 min. Stay on New Laurentia, pick a need zone, read tracks instead of chasing them, and keep your dog on sign search. Shoot when the animal is broadside and in range rather than proving you can hold a crosshair on a moving elk; trophies are procedurally generated in 2, so no two animals match.

FAQ

Is ammo free in Way of the Hunter 2? Each weapon has one free default ammo type; alternates are paid, and you carry only 2, 4 or 6 sets depending on your backpack.

Is my Early Access save safe in 1.0? Preserving progress through the 1.0 transition is the developers' stated goal, and they explicitly do not promise it 100%.

Will animals attack me in my first hour on New Laurentia? No species on that map is documented as charging in 1.0 — all three with implemented predator behaviour are on Kilimaya Reserve.

Do I need the Deluxe Edition to start? No. Deluxe adds the Season Pass, the Heirloom Pack and 24 hours of early access, and most Season Pass content is unreleased — Standard plus the $4.99 Heirloom Pack is cheaper.
